He'd heard the rumors about Chervil- the extravagance, the flashing lights, the strangely happening night scene for such a small town.
Hot damn, the rumors were true.
The sun was setting over Chervil Town, and all around him the shops were lighting up. Flashing lights advertising music, food and alcohol shone from the windows all around him, small groups consisting of girls dressed in skimpy clothing and boys trying to act big and tough passed him by. These were his people; he was home.
Edwin had only just arrived in Chervil, bringing along all of his pokemon for the trip. His Snorunt, Verus, floated just behind his right shoulder, keeping as close as she could without running into her trainer so as not to lose him. His other companions were tucked safely in their pokeballs, kept securely in his front pockets.
"Check it out!" Edwin motioned to a crowd of people a few blocks ahead of them, flashing lights coming from the middle. "I bet it's a pokemon battle, let's head over there."
He quickened his pace and, with Verus struggling to keep up, strode to the crowd, but was disappointed with the view. He attempted to elbow his way in but was promptly pushed back by some asshole trying to get a better look and, grumbling, he stepped back and stewed in his own disappointment.
Dom had been in Cherville for several weeks now. He hadn't the gal to challenge the gym leader as of yet. His team was stronger, and getting better with each passing day, and yet he knew he was not yet strong enough for a gym battle. The good news was that fighting was not the only way to help his pokemon progress. It seemed as though every hour a new spar spurned up in the heart of town, and a new pokemon would take to the floor. He had seen a number of exotic pokemon already, and knew that he would only find more. He knew most of the Pokemon from the first three regions, however the other regions were foreign to him.
Hearing the start of yet another pokemon battle Dom took off down the cobblestone path to where all the commotion was. Clare had been sleeping peacefully on a bench next to him when the boy took off, and was less than enthused that they were taking off so abrubtly. Shaking her delicate fur, the vulpix slowly let herself off the bench, and then in a much faster manner than Dominic, ran up the street to catch him.
By the time he had gotten there the crowd had already formed...funny, when he battled crowds didn't appear. Dom felt a little put out, he had expected people to be more impressed with the mud shot of Suchi, or Clare's fire spin. Yet no one ever showed up. Trying to get through the crowd, Dom was nearly knocked off his feet as a larger gentlemen in front of him took a step back. Throwing his arms into the air in a frantic attempt to catch his balance, the clumsy trainer rammed his elbow into another individual. He of course noticed immediately. Turning around he found that the man was backing away from the group, as if the elbow had been enough to deter him from wanting to see the fight at all.
Oh man, I didn't mean to...wait...
Dominic was a nice guy, his first instinct was to apologize, but thats not what people wanted, they wanted action. No wonder nobody watched his fights. Each battle involved more "nice try" and less "fucking kill him already". Well if the crowd wanted a scene, Dominic would give it to them.
"Hey man watch where you're going!"
He yelled out to the guy he had hit. Even saying it dominic felt fake, and pretty much like an ass. He wasn't used to acting like this, but sure enough a few people turned their heads to see what was going on. It was time to get some real attention.
He snapped out of his disappointment as the same asshole who's pushed him back began screaming at him for some asinine reason- clearly he'd been watching where he was going, this fuck hadn't been in the way a moment before.
"Watch where you're flinging those spider limbs!" he shouted back, immediately jumping to his own defense. Not once in his entire life had Edwin been yelled at, and he wasn't about to let this kid get away with breaking his streak.
A few people on the outskirts of the battle ring had turned to watch by now; it was clear they weren't going to get a good view of whatever battle was taking place in the middle, but they already had front row to this incoming flurry of action.
This new attention certainly wasn't lost on Edwin, who had always been one for showmanship. "Why don't I teach you a lesson!" he shouted, thrusting a hand into his pocket for a pokeball. His call for battle caught the attention of even a few passerby and, with people looking from the dark curly-haired man to the short pale boy expectantly, Edwin thrust one of his pokeballs into the air.
In front of him materialized his mutated Gothita. Icio shook his head, refreshing himself from the stuffy air inside his pokeball. Once he acclimated to Chervil's city air- a huge difference from the air around Clement Falls- he looked to his opponent.
"Yeah okay! Teach you not to try and run people over to get where your going!"
He was in it now, and the man's equally outrageous response had completely justified Dominic's initial actions. Or at least in his mind it had. Clare was already out and ready to face off against the Pokemon that materialized before them. She lept out in front of Dom, not knowing exactly what was going on, but taking clear note that the man was yelling and had unsheathed a Pokemon. The vulpix waved its tails from side to side, ready to pounce when the order was given.
Dominic however took a moment and looked at the creature, yet another one he had never seen before. His Pokedex sounded off, recognizing the mutated Pokemon as what it should have been.
Gothita the fixation Pokemon- They intently observe both Trainers and Pokémon. Apparently, they are looking at something that only Gothita can see.
That couldn't be right. The picture that came up looked different from the Pokemon in front of him. If Dominic had guessed on his own, he would have thought the Pokemon to be an Ice type, and yet his Pokedex clearly said Psychic. Either way Clare was ready to go.
"Start off with an Ember Clare!"
The Vulpix replied, letting out a light cry as if agreeing with Dom, and then with a light inhalation the small fire attack burst from her mouth. The small blast of fire was meant to strike the Gothita and see how it responded. How would Psychic fair against the likes of Fire.
Edwin's smirked, watching as his opponent looked up information on his Gothita; his extensive education on all things pokemon was clearly going to come in handy for this battle. Vulpix had been a popular choice for many, particularly for its glorious evolution. He had always been more of a Growlithe guy, himself.
His musings were cut short by his opponent attacking first- a basic attack, but Icio was inexperienced. Rather than toy with his pokemon's low speed Edwin ordered, "Use Psybeam, but aim straight for the attack coming for you!"
Icio, while reluctant to take orders from his trainer, was forced to accept he wasn't yet skilled enough in battling to figure things out for himself; battling with Crasse was one thing, but this Vulpix and its trainer actually knew what they were doing. He charged up his attack, drawing his psychic powers from each of his antennae. The bowlike appendages on his head glowed pink as they generated energy, releasing a short burst to the antennae sticking up in between them. From this antennae burst a steady stream of circular attacks, each glowing pink as they traveled through the air.
The attacks met in between the two pokemon, both coming to a halt. The Ember, cast by the slightly stronger Vulpix, pushed through the Psybeam before dissipating along with Icio's attack. Edwin, being a huge fucking dork, pumped his fist in victory. Score one for the winners.
Icio paid no attention to Edwin's antics, and instead decided to play a card he knew: seduction. He looked to the Vulpix and batted his incredible eyelashes, simultaneously blowing a kiss. "Gothi," he purred, complimenting the pokemon's beautiful curly tails, hoping to captivate his opponent with his wonderful charms.
ooc: You don't have your pokemon's genders listed on your profile so I guessed Clare's gender. Captivate only works on pokemon of the opposite gender, so if Clare is male it won't have any effect regardless uwu
+in case you don't see it in the cbox, the move is Captivate
The Ember struck the psybeam and both attacks broke apart, a smart tactic that Dominic had already found a way around. Or at least he had thought as much before the Gothita began its captivate. Clare at first just growled, uninterested in the Gothita's cute attempt at pandering...but...he was kinda cute...
Dominic watched Clare, who normally would look ready to continue, completely entranced in the small creature it was supposed to be fighting. He growled yelling out another command.
"Focus Clare! Give it a killer Fire Spin"
Clare shook her head, as if refocusing on the fight at hand, and began her fire spin by running forward, the fire wrapping around her body, then just a few feet away would fire the circular beam. Hopefully that attack would be able to avoid a direct attack with a psybeam, and actually do some damage.
Unfortunately what Dominic did not realize was that Clare was hesitant with her fire, not wanting to burn Gothita and change her appearance. Her special attack had taken a hit that Dominic wouldn't notice until after the attack.
If the firespin hit, it would circle around the opponent causing residual damage for a couple of seconds.
His attack wasn't particularly long-lasting, but it worked just long enough to leave its mark. Icio had no time to dwell on his successful attack, however, as a wheel of fire was coming straight for him.
He didn't need the order to dodge that Edwin had yelled out, he tried to on his own, but the Fire Spin circled around where he had been standing just previously and landed in a ring around him, the flames bombarding him with small embers, trapping him. Icio wasn't sure what was going on- and he didn't like it.
"Gothi!" he shouted in panic moments before the fire dissipated. Initially, he was caught off-guard with his newfound freedom, but Edwin called him back by shouting "Use Faint Attack!"
Icio locked in on the battle again and looked to the Vulpix. Without wasting another second he ran straight toward the fire fox, running with his arms behind him so as to maximize his speed. Just when it seemed as though he was about to hit his feelers glowed pink, and he was gone. He reappeared a split second later on the other side of his opponent, keeping up his speed, and made to ram into his opponent with his entire body.
Clare watched carefully as Gothita was consumed by the flames for a short while. It was disappointed in itself for holding back on the attack. Although the creature had been very flattering, it needed to focus on the battle and it would. The Gothita got out of the flame contraption before Dom took the chance to yell out another command, but Clare was ready, as the creature ran forward Clare was going to hold her ground, taking the tackle, and countering on her own. If Dom wasn't going to pay attention she would.
The Gothita collided with Clare from the side sending the vulpix skidding across the cobblestone, how unexpected. Clare had been ready to tack a tackle, but the feint attack caught her by surprise. Shakily the pokemon rose letting out a growl that resembled a cry. Dominic yelled out his next command.
"Show it your speed! Hit it with a tail whip!"
Clare bared its legs and leapt forward, the distance between it and Gothita not very far. She would run past the pokemon missing intentionally so that its tails could hit the pokemon as it ran past. If that was successful the Gothita would be at a lowered defense for what came next.
"Now, Quick attack"
The Vulpix squinted its eyes as it moved forward, making an attempt to quickly slam into the opponent and return the favor of the early feint attack. Even if the tail whip hadn't worked, she would still try and deal some damage with the quick attack.
Icio's confidence rose as his attack hit- as it should, Faint Attack only misses in special circumstances, but he was proud nonetheless. In fact, he was so proud he didn't hear Edwin call for him- "Dodge!"- and the Vulpix's tails brushed him as she passed. The softness of her tails raised his ego even farther; she was flirting with him, there was absolutely no way to refute that. With his ego high and his defense low, Icio didn't even realize Clare had turned around to attack him again, and the Quick Attack hit him full-force on his side.
Oh now, this was just ridiculous. He couldn't keep this up for very long, but if this Vulpix's idea of showing affection was by attacking him, then he would be affectionate right back. He focused his psychic energy, his antennae glowing red once again, and released a burst straight at the Vulpix as a Confusion attack.
Icio was too distracted to notice the crowd now forming, but Edwin certainly wasn't. He had become slightly detached from the battle, instead making eyes with every onlooker. The adjacent battle was still going strong, but with the crowd already too thick to get a good view they were attracting all the newcomers. Edwin pulled himself out of his newfound fame just long enough to give the order, "Use Psybeam!", and then went back to checking his crowd, even giving a wink to a young woman dressed in red.
Icio's Confusion may have been finished, but his Psychic energy was still being focused. He had the upper-hand in speed here- he wouldn't have to take time to charge his energy as it was already available, and with that energy he released a blast of psychic rings from his horn. This time, he hoped, there wouldn't be an attack in the way to stop it.
The crowd was not lost on Dominic, as a matter of fact its appearance virtually justified his rude behavior, and the guy who he was fighting seemed to be enjoying it too. The problem was that now he absolutely had to win. He couldn't lose in front of all these people! The Icio seemed to be weakened from the quick attack, but was back on its feet with a blast of confusion, although it couldn't be physically seen flying through the air, the bright light coming from the Gothita and the cringing look in Clare's eyes told Dominic the attack was not only happening, but that it was working. His vulpix took a step back, putting its head on the ground as if trying to rest it on something solid. He could here the snickering of the people around him, and that was all the inspiration Dom needed.
"Clare, break off of it and..."
He was going to yell an attack, but it seemed his opponent was already one step ahead, its horn preparing an attack Dom had seen before. The Gothita had once already avoided damage by firing the psybeam, and now it would try to cause damage with it.
"ROLL OUT OF THE WAY"
He finished his command, Clare both confused by his words, and the attack itself. However it put her on alert, looking up to see the attack being released, and using her position on the ground to roll out of the way narrowly avoiding damage. Stopping a few feet to the right, the Pokemon leaped up to her feet, ready to continue the battle.
It had been the first time in the fight Clare had been able to avoid getting injured. Dom let out a sigh of relief and noticed that his opponent had already started flirting with the nearby crowd, that punk was stealing his thunder! If he wanted confusion thats what he would get!
He commanded, the vulpix' eyes glowing a light purple. If the attack was successful the opponent would be unable to use the same moves as Vulpix, which although Clare wasn't good at it, meant the use of that pesky feint attack. Dom wondered why he hadn't thought of it earlier. But he had no time to kick himself, while Vulpix was still in a rather psychic move he would order her one last attack.
"Don't stop now! Send out your confuse ray!"
He had never seen Clare perform the attack before, and it was rather interesting watching her do it now, her eyes continued to glow brightly as a bright light seemed to connect the two Pokemon, it was Clare emitting the confuse ray. If this attack did its job, perhaps the Gothita would be on the embarrassing side of the fight rather than Clare!
No doubt the crowd was starting to get excited either way. Even with two younger Pokemon the fight was heating up, and anyone could appreciate it.
Edwin was distracted from the crowd when Icio's attack missed and, desperate to impress, he immediately ordered, "Lock in on that Vulpix and use Psybeam again! Don't miss this time!"
Edwin's instructions came at the same time as his opponent's, leaving Icio deaf to her next move. He grumbled about his trainers' rude instructions as well as his inability to manage more than one thing at a time, but didn't waste his own battle with being resentful. Instead, he looked straight as his opponent and-
Oh my, her eyes were glowing a lovely shade of lavender. To impress him, no doubt. In his distraction he didn't even notice his ability to use Faint Attack ebb away temporarily, and his enamoration was only emphasized when a physical spark was created between them. Oh my, he was getting lightheaded, could this be true, real love? Forgetting about Edwin's orders completely, Icio leaned in to get a kiss from his lovely opponent.
And he promptly fell flat on his face.
Neither Edwin nor Icio had realized the Gothita was getting weak, and therefore neither had anticipated his fat head hitting the ground would deliver the knockout blow. Edwin screamed out to his pokemon, "GET UP! GET UP YOU USELESS SACK OF SHIT, GET UP!" but he was out cold. With a sigh, Edwin retrieved Icio's pokeball from his belt and returned him to his safe haven, far away from the object of his affections.
"You have no idea what you're about to unleash," Edwin said, pulling out his only other battling pokemon; he had to save face and show off if he was going to get the crowd back on his side. "Go, Crasse!"
Showing his true showmanship, Edwin threw his pokeball into the air, releasing his next pokemon. A bright flash of light appeared, and from it an Eevee was procured. Compared to his flashy Gothita this Eevee seemed like a remarkably average choice, but Crasse was stronger than Icio, and even knew a couple special moves. Not only that, but Crasse didn't question Edwin's orders, making battling much cleaner.
"Alright, use Bite!" Edwin ordered. The Eevee sprung into action immediately- he hadn't seen much more battling action than Icio, but he'd had more practice nonetheless. He leaped toward the Vulpix, mouth wide open and ready to clamp down anywhere he could reach.
When the confuse ray concluded Clare prepared herself, her head low to the ground while her tails arced upward, preparing to pounce with perhaps a feint attack of her own, or maybe a quick attack. And yet...it was over. Dominic certainly hadn't expected it, and Clare seemed a little angry because of it. Not nearly as angry however as the opponent, who began yelling obsenities across the battle field at the fainted pokemon.
"Hey now there's no need for that..."
He mumbled under his breath, perhaps he would have said it louder if it had not been for the fact that the crowd seemed more than pleased with the humiliating knock out. He couldn't believe they were cheering for him to win, or at least they were...until another fox like pokemon appeared on the field.
Eevee. Dominic had always wanted an Eevee, mostly for the evolutions, perhaps a vaporeon or jolteon. Espeon would be cool and maybe even this leafeon he had heard so much about. No time to think about how lucky his opponent was the Eevee lept in for a bite clamping down hard with its jaws on the Vulpix neck. This all seemed rather familiar, and Dominic would not waste the opportunity to employ the once successful strategy.
"Will-O-Wisp while it is close!"
He yelled, but clare was already thinking the same thing, opening her mouth to a wide oval a blue flame rang out from deep within her gullet. If the eevee was hit, it would surely mean a nasty burn, and would undoubtedly cause a disconnection. Even if it did not immediately Clare would jump back to pull herself away from the Eevee.
"Tail Whip Clare!"
She would taught the Eevee, and try and pull it in closer, turning around and shaking its tails at the pokemon as if physically saying Nannynanny booboo, you can't get me. Hopefully this jesting would set the Eevee off guard for a future attack lowering its defense, that however would have to wait, as the opponent would no doubt have already responded with an attack of their own.
Crasse sank his teeth into his opponent's neck, delivering a satisfying bite. He quickly let go- not eager to get a throat full of fur, but apparently not quickly enough, as the purple flames burst on his side.
"Vee!" he shouted out in surprise at the attack- not a particularly strong one, but unlike most attacks the damage didn't cease once it had dissipated. He looked back down to his side to discover a singe mark in his fur, underneath which his skin was pink and raw. He winced as a surge of pain went through his body, only to regain his composure and catch his opponent's taunting gesture. He growled menacingly, as if to simultaneously warn the Vulpix about her mistake as well as to lower her attack.
On the sidelines, Edwin was beginning to worry. He'd blanched upon seeing his pokemon get burned, and he knew that even though he had a burn heal somewhere deep in his bag it would be unsportsmanlike to retrieve it mid-battle. He turned to Verus, who continued floating next to him and said, "This is some bullshit, hm?"
The contest-exclusive pokemon looked at him and didn't respond. She was certainly no battle expert, and had absolutely nothing to add.
Edwin sighed and called to his pokemon, "Use Rock Smash!" His order had a defeated tone to it- unless this Vulpix was his opponent's only pokemon, things weren't looking so good.
Crasse wasted no time in executing his move- one he'd practiced many times and could perform with ease. The pain had dwelled since the last surge so he was able to put it out of his mind as he sprinted toward the Vulpix and leaped into the air, coming down with his legs straightened. If his attack landed, he would deliver a blow known to crack boulders.
The eevee's discomfort was obvious and proved to Dominic that the attack had been a success. While he was still unsure if the tail whip had been as effective, he had little time to ask questions as the Eevee came rushing forward with a cruel attack in mind. Rock Smash.
Luckily not as effective on Pokemon as it was on rocks, otherwise Clare would be snapped in two, the attack did have a nasty ring to it. Dominic would order her to dodge, but to no avail, bracing for impact Clare took the hit to her shoulder, causing her to stumble over, rolling on the cobblestone ground.
When she had finally stopped the painful roll she opened her eyes back up. She was not yet finished fighting. Putting one paw forward she shakily rose back to a sitting position, taking a deep breath to regain her former composure. It wouldn't work though, Rock Smash was painful enough that Clare felt her shoulder badly aching. Her defense was down, and not only that but the attack had done some reasonable damage. She may not have been out of the fight yet, but things were not looking good on her end.
"Clare hit her where it hurts! Give her a faint attack"
If tail whip had worked, this would be a pretty decent hit as the vulpix used an attack scene once earlier in the fight, but by their opponent. Taking a running start, or rather a limping start the vulpix made its way towards the eevee, and when it was nearing the connection of the subsequent tackle it disappeared, re appearing to its left for what could very well be the last attack she was capable of.
Crasse jumped back from is attack, landing nimbly while the Vulpix wasn't quite so lucky. He didn't have time to watch, however, as the burn on his side surged in pain again, distracting him from the battle at hand. By the time he recovered his opponent was on her feet, looking at him with determination. He returned the look- he wanted nothing more than to win.
His ears perked up at his opponent's orders; Faint Attack wasn't a move he was familiar with, so he was going into this round blind. He braced himself as the Vulpix came toward him, and when she came close he made to dash out of the way, only to find his opponent was nowhere to be found. He stood strong and whipped his head around, searching for the now invisible Vulpix.
He found her- but not with his eyes.
He cried out in surprise as the Vulpix hit him on his left side, sending him stumbling over his own four legs. He tripped over himself for a moment before regaining his balance and turned back to face his opponent, preparing himself for whatever order was about to come.
"Quick Attack! Now!"
The Eevee raced forward, moving quicker than one would think his legs could allow. He lowered his head as he approached the Vulpix, hoping to catch the fire fox with his thick skull.
